  • What is The Walk to Emmaus?

The Walk to Emmaus is a three-day non-denominational journey that explores Christianity as a way of life through the lens of the New Testament. This well-organized weekend retreat is intended for both men and women, aiming to deepen and revitalize the faith of Christians by inspiring, challenging, and equipping adult church members for Christian action. It positively impacts individuals, families, and congregations. While The Walk to Emmaus is held worldwide, DUMC participants attend locally within a short drive. In 1978, The Upper Room of the General Board of Discipleship of the United Methodist Church trademarked Emmaus and successfully made the Roman Catholic program into a Protestant version.

  • FAQ's

Q: If I choose to attend Walk to EMMAUS, what can I expect?

A: Expect a camp experience designed like a Christian women's retreat. You will spend most of your time indoors, but bring a light jacket and walking boots, depending on the weather, as there are some outdoor activities. The outdoor activities are not strenuous. You will be sharing sleeping quarters with other attendees of the same sex.

Q: I have a CPAP Machine? Will that be an issue?

A: No. Many attendees bring their CPAP machine.

Q: What happens during the Walk to EMMAUS? Are we actually going on a walk?

A: This ministry is based on the walk to the town of Emmaus by the disciples after Jesus died. Their eyes were closed to his identity until the right time when he revealed himself. While you may walk to certain activities, you will not be walking/hiking in general. Accommodation is made for those who have difficulty walking. You will have very relaxed conversations and take a deeper dive into the life of a Christian.

Q: I’m not sure I know enough about Jesus or the Bible to attend. Will I be put on the spot?

A: This experience is for all Christians, no matter how new or mature you are in your faith. Everyone is on their journey, and where you are is perfect. Participation is relaxed and fun, not forced. You will get out of the experience as much as you put into the experience.

Q: What is the location? How do I get to camp?

A: The camp is within a two-hour drive from DUMC. Your sponsor will take you, help you get settled in, stop for dinner along the way, pick you up, and bring you back.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: Attending a Walk to EMMAUS costs you NOTHING! Expenses are covered by your sponsor.

Q: What if I need to leave early?

A: Your sponsor is available all weekend, should an emergency arise. They are in communication with the camp leaders and can come get you. Part of their responsibilities is to support your family in your absence in any way they can, thus hopefully minimizing the need for you to leave.

Q: What do I need to take?

A: A packing list of suggested items will be given to you about a week before your walk.

    Q: I have food allergies/restricted diet.

A: No worries! The camp meal team will do everything they can to meet your needs.

  • What Happens at Emmaus?

The "Walk to Emmaus" is a 72-hour Christian retreat that starts on a Thursday evening and concludes on a Sunday evening. The retreat features inspiring talks delivered by laypeople and clergy, focusing on God's grace and its manifestation within the Christian community and the world. Participants, referred to as “pilgrims,” explore how grace is evident in life and learn ways to live a grace-filled life that impacts others. The retreat includes daily Holy Communion, offering a deeper understanding of Christ's presence among His followers. Throughout the weekend, pilgrims personally experience God's grace through the prayers and acts of service provided by a supportive community.

  • Who Can Go to Emmaus and What’s the Cost?

The walk is open to any adult interested in strengthening their spiritual life. DUMC will pair interested participants with a DUMC sponsor who has already completed the program, ensuring that the cost to participate is not a barrier.

  • Why Should I Consider Going?

The Walk to Emmaus is ideal for anyone who wants to grow as a Christian. Everyone is on a different spiritual path. If you have questions about prayer, Bible study, discipleship, living a deeper, more meaningful Christian life, or growing in Christian leadership responsibilities or skills, this experience is for you!
